Frequently Asked Questions
Townsville Bushwalking Club offers a wide range of walks, hikes, adventures, and social outings across North Queensland. Below are some of the questions people often ask before joining us.
Am I capable?
Townsville Bushwalking Club runs a range of activities with different distances, terrain, and difficulty levels. If one trip is not suitable for you right now, there will likely be another that is. We also have social outings, easier day walks, overnight trips, and more challenging off-track adventures for those with the experience and fitness to match. Our trip leaders are happy to provide advice about upcoming walks so you can choose something that suits your current ability, confidence, and experience. Please read the trip description carefully and contact the leader if you are unsure whether an activity is right for you.
Am I a bushwalker?
Our members come from all walks of life and all stages of life. Some are highly experienced, while others are just getting started. You do not need to be an expert to join in. If you enjoy the outdoors, want to build confidence, meet like-minded people, and explore North Queensland, you will likely feel right at home. Friendships form quickly when people share time on the trail, in the rainforest, beside creeks, on ridgelines, and around camp.
Can I try an activity before I become a member?
Visitors may be able to attend a club activity before becoming a member, subject to current club requirements, insurance conditions, and any visitor forms or waivers that may apply. Before attending, please contact the trip leader directly and make sure you understand the trip details, expectations, and any paperwork required. Also note that selecting "Going" on a Facebook event does not automatically register you for a walk. You must contact the leader directly to secure your place.
Do I need special equipment?
A positive attitude goes a long way, but you should also come properly prepared. Recommended gear usually includes:
- Sturdy walking shoes or boots suitable for uneven terrain
- A small backpack to carry your essentials
- Enough water for the conditions and trip length, often at least 2 to 3 litres
- Food, snacks, and any personal medications
- A hat, sunscreen, and suitable clothing for sun, rain, wind, and changing conditions
- A basic personal first aid kit
- A mobile phone, plus emergency contact details
- A rain jacket or warm layer when appropriate
- Swimwear, a dry bag, or canyoning-specific items for water-based trips where listed
- A contribution to your driver if carpooling is arranged
Always read the event description carefully, as some trips require extra gear for steep terrain, creek crossings, off-track travel, scrambling, or overnight camping. Also see the 'What to Bring' page.
Why walk with a club rather than individually or as a casual meetup group?
North Queensland offers incredible places to explore, but some of them are remote, rugged, hot, slippery, steep, or more challenging than they first appear. Walking with a club means benefiting from experienced trip leaders, group support, local knowledge, shared planning, and a stronger safety culture. It is also a great way to discover places you might never find, or feel confident visiting, on your own. Most importantly, it is about enjoying the outdoors with a community of people who value adventure, nature, and looking out for one another.
Why the membership fee?
The membership fee helps support the running of the club and the activities we offer. This may include things such as insurance, administration, website and newsletter costs, club resources, and other incidental expenses. Membership also helps the club remain sustainable, organised, and able to continue providing enjoyable and well-managed activities for members. For current membership details, please visit the club's membership page or contact the committee.
When and where are club meetings?
Club meeting details can change from time to time, so the best place to check is the Townsville Bushwalking Club website, newsletter, Facebook page, or current events calendar. If you are interested in attending a meeting, feel free to get in touch. Visitors are generally welcome.
Are children welcome at activities?
Some activities may be suitable for children, depending on the nature of the trip, the terrain, and the child's age, experience, and ability. Children older than 12 and under 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian unless the Club has approved other arrangements consistent with its current policies. Please contact the trip leader before attending with a child so they can advise whether the activity is appropriate.
