Cape Upstart (April 1971)

Cape Upstart, April 1971: a rugged coastal trek with routes past Pebbly Beach, Moonlight Bay, Shark Bay and Kingfish Bay. Hike along bluffs, scrunge, and rock-hopping tracks, discover middens, deep pools, and butterfly-filled creeks. A classic North Queensland adventure on land and sea.

The route around the north coast is straightforward. Strolling along the boulders at the water's edge is pleasant. Often one is forced up by bluffs sticking out into the sea. Sometimes one can walk along the brink of these at other times it is necessary to take to the scrunge. Some of the latter tends to be abrasive. There was no shortage of water (recent rain). There are middens along some cliff tops.

The west coast route is very easy. There are 70 odd huts along this coast. At high tide some of the entrances may provide slight difficulty.

The southern route is initially on rocks between the mangroves & the hills - then across flat plains. From here it is quite big. The saddle beyond it failed to impress on either occasion.

The central route shown is very fast - delightful rock-hopping & scrambling all the way. There are some marvellous, deep pools en route.
