Reaching the Summit: Taking a Hike to Mount Bartle Frere

In this episode of the Take A Hike podcast, host Blair Woodcock sits down with Townsville Bushwalking Club regulars Cherry Judge and Luen Warneke to discuss a true bucket-list challenge: Mount Bartle Frere. As the highest mountain in Queensland, standing at a formidable 1,622 metres, this hike is a major goal for many local adventurers.

Choosing Your Approach

Located just south of Cairns near Innisfail, Mount Bartle Frere offers two distinct ways to reach the top. For most, the Eastern approach, starting from the Josephine Falls car park, is the standard route. It is a demanding 15-kilometre return journey, notoriously steep.

If you are looking for something a bit different, the Western approach begins at a higher elevation near the Gillies Highway. While it requires different logistics-like coordinating a car swap or a through-walk-it can be a great way to manage the incline if you are planning an overnight stay.

The Reality of the Climb

Our hosts emphasised that this is not a casual walk in the park. The trek features a challenging boulder field near the summit. These granite rocks can be as large as houses, and navigating them requires concentration and agility.

  • Safety First: The boulder field is treacherous in the rain. If the clouds roll in, the safest choice is to turn back.
  • The Helipad: Many hikers consider the helipad to be the 'true' summit because of its spectacular views. The actual peak is often shrouded in trees and can feel like a bit of an anticlimax after the intense climb.
  • Planning: Aim for a 12-hour return trip to give yourself plenty of time, and always pack out your own rubbish to keep this beautiful area pristine.

Pro-Tips from the Experts

  • Timing Matters: Avoid this hike during the summer months; the heat can make the ascent miserable. Plan your training in January for a comfortable trek in June.
  • Water Management: If you are hiking from the Eastern side, ensure you carry enough water. If you choose to filter water near the summit, be mindful of environmental hygiene and the impact of human waste on local water sources.
  • Prepare for Wildlife: Yes, there will be leeches! As Cherry and Luen noted, while it might be a bit gross at first, you will quickly get desensitised to them by your second visit.

Whether you are an experienced hiker or looking to level up your fitness, Mount Bartle Frere is an iconic Queensland experience that rewards preparation and respect for the mountain.
