Whether you have a high-energy Border Collie Kelpie cross like Cherry's pup Vlad, or a pair of slightly stubborn Golden Retrievers like Blair, we have got you covered. Luen might not currently own a dog (though she is adopting a cat named Tia soon!), but between the three of them, they have mapped out some fantastic spots to get outdoors with your pets.
Top Dog-Friendly Walking Tracks
Here are some of the best spots to explore with your pooch in and around Townsville:
- Ross River Circuit & Dam Wall: For a flat, easy stroll, the Ross River bike path is a winner. For something a bit different, take a walk along the Ross River Dam wall. It is a flat 6-7 km stretch, perfect for an out-and-back walk where you control the distance.
- Mount Louisa & Castle Hill: While the main constructed stairs at Mount Louisa might be tough on some dogs' joints, you can explore the old dirt fire trails on the Dalrymple side. Castle Hill also offers road walking options for a solid incline.
- Douglas Mountain Bike Reserve: The track near JCU starts with some stairs but turns into a great dirt track leading up to the summit.
- Mount Stuart: Walking up the road makes for a great training walk. Do not forget the little loop at the summit and the playground cliff.
- Northern Beaches & Hills: Explore Secret Beach in South Townsville at the estuary, or head north for walks from Saunders Beach. The hills behind Jensen (around Apple Tree Drive) offer interlinking dirt tracks great for exploring.

Essential Rules for Hiking with Dogs

Before you head out, remember the golden rules of bushwalking with pets:
- No National Parks: Dogs are completely prohibited in National Parks. Always check the area's zoning status before you leave home.
- Stay on Leash: Keep your dog on a lead at all times to protect them, other walkers, and native wildlife.
- Pick Up After Your Pet: Leave no trace. Always carry bags and clean up after your dog immediately.
- Know Your Dog's Limits: Be mindful of the terrain. Stairs can be hard on bigger or older dogs, so opt for dirt tracks or flat paths if needed. Watch out for aggressive dogs in off-leash areas like Pallarenda.
