Double Creek Chasm 1971

Double Creek Chasm hike, Aug 1971: a rugged North Queensland adventure near Giru with creek scrambling, waterfalls, grottos, fig trees and native wisteria. Climbers explored ridges with sweeping views to Bowen and Cape Upstart, making this a classic bushwalking and rock-climbing route.

Route
Park cars at gate before creek bridge on Giru / Woodstock Road. Walk on right hand side of creek and then follow up dry bed of creek leaving rocky outcrop on your right as you enter the creek proper. Creek climbs steeply at first on good rock through grottos and waterfalls, then way is blocked by big rock face and pool. A hold on the right hand side gives access to top (see P. Reiman for details).

Next big pool blocks way. Leave the creek here and take route through forest on right to return in due course to creek. There is a route on the left on the rock face. Old out of balance moves. Make sure insurance is up to date before attempting this route. A feature of this creek is the fine fig trees (Ficus infectoria) and native wisteria (Millettia megasperma). After lunch E. Bourne and B. Kelly climbed to the saddle which gives access to the height above Walkers Creek. These two creeks will make a fine through walk. Return was by way of the peak on the right of the creek coming down and a fine ridge in open forest with great views over the plains to Bowen and Cape Upstart.
