Discovering the Terraces at Mount Elliot

In the latest episode of the Take A Hike podcast, hosts Blair Woodcock, Luen Warneke, and Cherry Judge dive deep into one of North Queensland's most spectacular hiking destinations: The Terraces at Mount Elliot.

Located within Bowling Green Bay National Park, the Terraces are often cited by locals as a favourite hike. Featuring rock after rock and endless cascading waterfalls, it is a true natural wonder that sits nestled on the side of Mount Elliot.

The Challenge of the Trek

This is not a casual stroll. The hike to the Terraces is approximately 12 kilometres return and is classified as a Grade 5 (difficult) hike. You will need to be prepared for:

  • Rock hopping: The terrain is off-track and requires agility.
  • Confidence: Hikers need to be comfortable lifting themselves up and over various rock formations.
  • Good gear: Solid footwear and a high level of physical fitness are essential.

For those who push further, the trail leads up to 'High Camp,' a monolithic boulder that offers breathtaking views across Chunda Bay and out toward Cape Cleveland. It is the perfect spot for a breather, or for the very experienced, a jumping-off point to attempt the summit of Mount Elliot.

Access and Conservation

One reason the Terraces remain so pristine is that they are accessible only via private property. Because of this, public access is restricted and requires the landowner's permission.

This is where the Townsville Bushwalking Club plays a vital role. The club has spent decades nurturing relationships with local farmers to ensure hikers can enjoy these sites while minimising environmental impact and respecting private land. If you are keen to experience the Terraces safely and responsibly, the club organises guided trips throughout the year.

Explore More with the Club

While the Terraces are a highlight, the podcast crew also discussed other local adventures:

  • The Cascades & Hidden Falls: Great options for those looking for different challenges and rewards within the same area.
  • Castle Hill: A local favourite for connecting various tracks for a solid morning or afternoon of exercise.
  • Cape Pallarenda: A fantastic spot to explore historic sites like Smedleys homestead, accessible via the Smedleys Track near the Bohle River mouth.
