Take a Hike: Exploring Hinchinbrook Island
In this episode of the Take a Hike podcast, host Blair Woodcock sits down with Townsville Bushwalking Club members Luen Warneke and Cherry Judge to discuss one of North Queensland's most iconic destinations: Hinchinbrook Island.
Often described as a real-life Jurassic Park, Hinchinbrook Island offers a world-class hiking experience on the famous 32-kilometre Thorsborne Trail. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or looking for your first multi-day adventure, here is the lowdown from our local experts.
The Thorsborne Trail: What to Expect
While some ultra-runners complete the trail in a single day, the recommended pace is four days and three nights. This allows plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and take side trips.
- Nina Peak: A must-do for spectacular views. You can drop your heavy packs at the saddle and take a quick climb to the top to look out over the landscape, including The Thumb and Mount Bowen.
- Zoe Bay: Often cited as the highlight of the trail. The team recommends spending an extra day here to swim in the rock pools and enjoy the scenery. Keep an eye out for the "croc slides" near the boat landing!
- Mulligan Falls: The only inland campsite on the route, featuring beautiful falls and friendly (but please don't feed!) fish.
Expert Tips for Your Trek
- Permits are Key: With a limit of 40 people on the island at any time, permits are highly sought after. Cherry and Luen suggest checking the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) website daily and, if possible, booking six months in advance.
- Leave No Trace: It is important to remember that fires are strictly prohibited anywhere on Hinchinbrook Island. Please protect this pristine environment by not lighting fires, regardless of what you might see on social media.
- Be Prepared: Always carry proper navigation tools and stay safe. If you decide to go off-trail to explore hidden creek pools, ensure you have the skills and experience to return safely.
More Than Just the Trail
Beyond the Thorsborne, Hinchinbrook features iconic summits like Mount Bowen and Mount Diamantina. While these are challenging, they offer rewarding views for those determined to tackle them.
Whether you are planning your first trip or looking to revisit this stunning island, the Thorsborne Trail remains a bucket-list experience. For all the latest maps, booking information, and safety guidelines, head over to the QPWS website.
Stay safe on the trails, and happy hiking!
