Our group gathered at dawn at the Sealink passenger ferry terminal, excitement building as we prepared to board the 6:30 am departure to Magnetic Island.

Today's walk held special significance - it would be Ian Wallace's last official walk with the Townsville Bushwalking Club before his move to Brisbane.

From Nelly Bay, we set off with purpose, climbing via Mandalay Avenue as the morning began to warm the landscape. The ascent over the ridge tested our mettle in the building heat, but we made it to the Sphinx Lookout before continuing our descent to the jewel of today's adventure - Endeavour Falls.

The recent rains had worked their magic on these seasonal falls, transforming them into a spectacular cascade that took our breath away. We spent a glorious hour at the falls, chatting, sharing laughs and immersing ourselves in the cool, refreshing water - a welcome relief from the warm, humid conditions that had accompanied our trek.

After reluctantly leaving the falls, we made a detour to the Arcadia pub for a few cold drinks and then to SOS for a fantastic seafood lunch, before beginning our return journey, arriving back in time to catch the 1:35 pm ferry to Townsville.

As the island receded behind us, the day's joy was tinged with sadness. Ian Wallace has been far more than just a long-time member of our club - he's been a pillar of our executive committee, generously sharing his time, leadership, laughter, and wisdom with all of us.

Ian, thank you for everything you've given to this club. We'll miss you more than you know, and we wish you every happiness and many new trails in your next chapter. It was a bittersweet but truly memorable day on the trails.
