Hiking Magnetic Island: Top Trails & Secret Spots
Discover the best hikes on Magnetic Island with the Take A Hike podcast! Blair, Luen Warneke, and Cherry Judge share top trails, from the easy Hawkings Point sunset walk to hidden off-track adventures like Mount Cook and the Searchlight Tower.
Magnetic Island: From Easy Strolls to Off-Track Adventures
Welcome back to the Take A Hike podcast blog! The weather is finally starting to cool down a fraction here in North Queensland (hello, 23-degree mornings!), making it the perfect time to get out and explore. In our latest episode, host Blair Woodcock sat down with Townsville Bushwalking Club experts Cherry Judge and Luen Warneke to talk all things Magnetic Island.
Whether you are looking for a quick sunset stroll or a strenuous off-track scramble, "Maggie" has something for everyone. And while you could try stand-up paddleboarding across from Townsville like a few brave souls do, we highly recommend taking the ferry or a kayak to save your energy for the trails!
Must-Do Magnetic Island Trails
Here is a breakdown of the best trails discussed in the episode, categorised by difficulty to help you plan your next island adventure.
Easy & Scenic Walks
- Hawkings Point: Located at the end of Picnic Bay, this 1.2km walk is straightforward and highly rewarding. A granite boulder at the top overlooks Picnic Bay and Rocky Bay, making it an incredibly photogenic spot for sunsets. There is also a rough goat track leading down to Rocky Bay if you want to explore further.
- Searchlight Tower Track: A hidden gem located between Arthur and Florence Bay. Just follow the road down from the Forts car park to find this old WWII searchlight tower and enjoy beautiful, quiet lookout views.
Moderate Adventures
- Mandalay Avenue to Arcadia or The Forts: Starting in Nellie Bay, this ridge walk is highly recommended in the cooler winter months to take advantage of the stunning breezes. From the junction, you can head down to Arcadia (keep an eye out for seasonal waterfalls and the impressive Sphinx lookout on the official National Park map) or push on to the Forts.
- Florence Bay via The Forts: National Parks recently installed proper steps down an old, washed-out WWII road. This track connects the Forts directly down to Florence Bay, giving you fantastic access to the famous five bays: Florence, Balding, Radical, Arthur, and Horseshoe.
Tough & Off-Track Expeditions
- Five Beach Bay: An intense, boulder-hopping challenge near Horseshoe Bay. Expect a lot of scrambling up and down creek beds. It might look short on paper, but it packs a punch!
- Dragon's Back: Located off Horseshoe Bay, this rock formation looks exactly like a resting dragon with its nose sticking out. You will need to kayak over to access the hike up.
- Mount Paluma & Mount Cook: For experienced navigators only. Mount Cook is the highest peak on the island, requiring serious bush-bashing and map skills. Mount Paluma is slightly smaller but features overgrown retaining walls and stairs from an old, forgotten track.
