November 2011
Despite rain, three walkers reached Alligator Creek Falls and spotted snakes. A modified Cloudy Creek walk ended with a BBQ at Paradise Waterhole. Next up: cactus control at Walkers Creek, the Jourama Falls break-up weekend, and dinner at the Dalrymple Hotel to close the season.
Last walk:
The walk to Alligator Creek Falls on Sunday 6 November was nearly cancelled, however on the morning three keen walkers kept the spirit of bushwalking alive by walking along to the falls, and they enjoyed reasonable weather and saw several snakes.
The Cloudy Creek walk on Sunday 13 had to be modified as there had been heavy showers overnight on the range, and the rocks in the creeks were wet. Instead, the party walked up the lower section of Tom’s Foot Track, explored the upper course of Innominate Creek above the Foot Track spur and had a lunch break there. This creek was followed back to Crystal Creek, and there was a late afternoon BBQ at Paradise waterhole - thanks Phil.
Next walk:
The Walkers Creek cactus eradication trip is set down for Sunday 20 November. It is expected that there’ll still be enough water in Walkers Creek after the recent showers for the swimming holes to be full, so this should be a very pleasant outing. We’ll be taking along some weed spray to deal with the remaining clumps, but there should still be enough time for anyone interested to stroll to the top of the falls to enjoy the view.
Future walks:
We have a spare slot in the programme for the weekend of 4 December. This will be filled at the next meeting.
The Break-up weekend on 10/11 December will be a car camp at Jourama Falls NP campsite. There’ll be the option for walkers to come up for the day on Sunday 11 to join in the festivities.
A dinner at the Dalrymple Hotel has been suggested for Friday 2 December to celebrate the end of the season. Expressions of interest in this should be made to Keith, and the details will be finalized at the next meeting.
Anyone interested in a weekend walk up Tom’s Foot Track, overnighting at the DCK shelter and returning by the same route should please contact Wilf – this walk will be scheduled as soon as there is support, and we have several free weekends before the end of the year.
Other business:
A slide show evening is proposed – the club has some brilliant photographers in its ranks and this will be an opportunity to see some of their work, and also for members to show their own photos of landscape and bushwalking interest. To keep within bounds photos of this year’s trips only will be included. Please contact Keith if interested.
Planning for next season’s programme has begun, so please let a committee member know of your suggestions for trips to be included. We have an extra QBD at the beginning of October next year so there’ll be an additional three-day weekend for any longer trips.
Keith has booked for a six-walker party to do the Thorsburn Trail in a four-day walk on the island at the beginning of May – only three vacancies remain for this, so if you’re interested be quick.
