Paluma Range above Ollera Creek, Sept 1971: a tough climb through steep gullies, loose rock, stinging gympie and tangled rainforest vines. Despite a cold, scratchy camp, the rugged terrain revealed new possibilities for exploring Star River and upper Ollera Creek in North Queensland’s wild ranges.

To reach the crest of the Paluma Range we climbed a steep, dry gully well endowed with loose rock and gympie. The campsite on the top was in rainforest of particularly unsavoury nature, containing an abundance of wait-awhile and long wiry vines bristling with vicious spikes. There was no view, a state of mild thirst and cold prevailed during the night among some, while others were kept awake by gympie stings.

Such adversities heightened the pleasures of Ollera Ck.
