Discover the Hidden Gems of the Bambaroo Track

If you are looking for your next North Queensland adventure, the Bambaroo Track is calling. Located just an hour north of Townsville, this track offers a perfect blend of lush rainforest, incredible giant fig trees, and stunning waterfalls. In the latest episode of the Take A Hike podcast, host Blair Woodcock sat down with club members Luen Warneke and Cherry Judge to break down everything you need to know about this spectacular trail.

Getting Started: Frosty Mangoes and Trailheads

As the team points out, one of the best parts of heading to the Bambaroo Track is the proximity to a local icon. Located just past Frosty Mangoes on the way north, it is the perfect excuse to treat yourself to an ice cream or sorbet before or after your hike.

  • Location: North of Townsville, just past Eleanor Creek.
  • Access: The start of the track is on private property. Please check wanderstories.space for essential access details and permission requirements before you head out.

What to Expect on the Trail

This track is a unique journey that transitions from open bushland-where you will find an Optus and Telstra tower often used as a launch point for local hang gliders-into dense, breathtaking rainforest. As you trek further, the environment shifts into a landscape filled with mape trees and massive, ancient fig trees that rival the famous specimens found in the Tablelands.

Waterfalls and History

The track is famous for its rewarding sights, particularly if you are heading out after some recent rainfall. Key highlights include:

  • Fig Tree Falls: A stunning waterfall that appears to flow right through a fig tree.
  • Insulator Creek Falls: A short scramble downstream from the junction, offering a beautiful gorge experience.
  • Historical Remnants: As you climb the ridgeline, keep an eye out for old mining artifacts, such as bottle dumps and rusted tools. Please remember to look, take photos, and leave everything exactly as you find it.

Practical Hiking Tips

The Bambaroo Track is a significant climb, with a total elevation gain of roughly 1,000 meters. While some consider it slightly less intense than the nearby Bullocky Toms track, it is still a demanding walk that requires a good level of fitness. Depending on your pace, you should plan for a full day out on the trail.

Because the track is quite long and steep, the Townsville Bushwalking Club is even looking at using it as a training ground for those interested in practising for overnight hikes. Carrying a weighted pack on this terrain is excellent preparation for bigger adventures.
