14 Oct 12 : one day walk – The Cascades

A classic creek adventure to The Cascades, with rock hopping, snake sightings, steep scrambles, bush bashing, waterfall pools, and a chilly swim at the top. A rewarding day out in rugged North Queensland creek country.

Good sunny weather. 7 walkers at Eco Park start 8:00 am, then met Kev Smith near rockslides about 09:10 (Kev had camped at black rock Saturday night). Snake lady strikes again on the track going in, almost danced on a small snake. Poor thing was terrified (the small snake that is). Easy usual rock hopping walk up the creek to smoko spot at 10 am at pool and small waterfall. Another small snake on top of large boulder posed for close up photos. Wendy and Elizabeth decided to stay at the smoko stop, the other six moved on at 10:20 am. Steep climb up rockface of first main waterfall. At 11 am arrived at base of Cascades. Kev and Nick stayed here. Four of us climbed up western side of Cascades rockface about 1/3, then went bush. At the top waterfall and pool by noon (three hours from rockslides). Great swim, albeit chilly water , very good water flow, good lunch and views. At 1 pm head back down, used eastern side of Cascades in the bush. Met Kev and Nick at base of Cascades, then came down eastern side of creek via bush bashing to below the first main falls (1:40 pm), then stayed in the creek rock hopping to meet Wendy and Elizabeth at 2 pm. Back at Rockslides at 3 pm (two hours from top of cascades), smoko and swim, departed there 3:30 pm to reach Eco Park at 4:30 pm. Good day out.
