White Rock Bay
A small group explored the rarely visited western side of Cape Cleveland, with 4x4 thrills, sandy coast walks, mangrove sounds, sea eagles, rock scrambles, and a shady dune lunch before uncovering relics and tamarind treats.

White Rock Bay - 13th of the 9th 2025 - reconnoitre
On Saturday, a small group bashed our way up to the western side of Cape Cleveland. The club hasn't been through this area in several years, so we decided it was time to reconnect with the overlooked part of our backyard.
The day started with the 6 km drive down the Coco Creek 4x4 track, and the group felt enlivened with a little early morning whiplash.

We proceeded to walk/trudge, depending on your preference for walking in soft sand, along the coastline, listening to the popping and clucking of the mangroves and watching the Sea Eagles. There was also a quick snack break for those of us curious enough to eat Burdekin Plums.
Once the mangroves ended, it was just a small rock scramble into the bay itself.

The group enjoyed a quick lunch in a shady spot on the dune before leaving their bags and going for a brief exploration up the beach.
It's amazing to see Townsville and the shipping lanes from this angle.
On the way out, we stopped to investigate an interesting plank that featured copper bolts and some lead lining, and indulged in a brief side quest to snack on a well-situated tamarind tree.
The adventure ended with a drive back down the 4x4 track, with helmets and mouthguards at the ready.
