January Newsletter
Sunrise hikes, waterfall adventures and wet-season exploring with the Townsville Bushwalking Club. Read our Magnetic Island Endeavour Falls trip report, upcoming Insulator Creek walk at Bambaroo, and discover hidden gorges, cascades and rainforest routes around Townsville.
Hello fellow bushwalkers,
Welcome to a new year of adventure!
We've already published two events on our website and Facebook events.
January kicked off with a classic Townsville Bushwalking Club sunrise adventure on Magnetic Island, where Cherry led a memorable circuit walk to Endeavour Falls. From the climb to Sphinx Lookout to a refreshing swim beneath rain-fed cascades and a well-earned seafood lunch in Arcadia, it was a fitting and heartfelt farewell walk for long-time member and club stalwart Ian Wallace. A beautiful reminder of how much these shared days on the track mean to our community. Read the trip report here:

Insulator Creek Falls
Date - Sun, Feb 1, 2026
Leader - Cherry
Hi everyone,
This coming Sunday, 1 February, we’re heading out to Insulator Creek at Bambaroo.
Meeting time - 6:30 am [location will be emailed by Saturday]
Duration - we will aim to return by 3 pm
About
Rated – Medium Hard.
Terrain – Bush tracks, uneven footings (tree roots, rocks), steep climb (all climbing on the track for 3-4 hours on way up), with some off-track creek walking around midday (steep track descent/ascent, bushbashing, exposed ledges, rockhopping, slippery rocks, wet shoes likely).
We don’t often get to do this walk in conditions like this, but after the recent rains it’s going to be beautiful. Fig Tree Falls should be flowing well, and Insulator Creek Falls will be full too, which makes this a pretty special time to be out there.
The big attraction for me though are the giant fig trees. They are a sight to behold!
Definitely one of those walks that really comes into its own after rain.
If you’re keen for a stunning post-rain walk and a good day out with the club, hope you can join us.

You can do 3 walks and qualify to become a TBWC member!
See you on the adventure,
Cherry

While Luen's Mt Paluma walk did not go ahead this month due to a lack of interest, the wet season hasn't slowed our members down. Cherry's Maggie walk was completely full, and several Club members have been out exploring on their own, some checking out Forestry Road waterfalls and also Florence's Gorge on the east fork of Stoney Creek - a name that traces back to the Townsville Bushwalking Club - along with intermittent streams and a mini slot-canyon tucked into the rainforest.

Above this little gorge, lovely cascades come alive after heavy rain, though they fade quickly once the weather dries. Keep an eye out for future trips as the creeks keep flowing and new routes reveal themselves.
With creeks flowing and tracks slick after rain, take a little extra care out there. Expect slippery rock, muddy footings and the occasional leech, and consider packing dry bags to keep essentials protected. Trekking poles can be a real help on steep, wet sections. As always, we look out for one another on the track.
