The Wait is Over: Alligator Creek Falls Reopens

Great news for Townsville hikers! After a three-year closure, the popular walking trail to Alligator Creek Falls in Bowling Green Bay National Park is officially back open.

In our latest episode of Take A Hike, our hosts Blair Woodcock, Luen Warneke, and Cherry Judge sit down to discuss the return of this North Queensland favourite. Whether you are looking for a full-day challenge or a quiet spot to cool off, there is something for everyone at Alligator Creek.

The Hike: What to Expect

The standard trek from the car park to the falls is a 17-kilometre round trip. For an average hiker, you should allow about five hours of walking time, including breaks.

  • The Path: Much of the trail follows a firebreak road, which is exposed to the sun, so be sure to pick a cooler day or head out just after the rainy season.
  • Terrain: Once you pass Cockatoo Creek, the trail transitions into a beautiful, shaded rainforest section.
  • Creek Crossings: There are several creek crossings along the way. Be mindful of water levels, especially after heavy rain, as they can get quite deep. Don't be afraid to get wet; as Luen says, it is a great way to keep your body temperature down on a warm day!

Want a Challenge? Try the Upper Falls

For those seeking a bit more adventure, there is an unofficial, marked track that leads up the right-hand side of the main falls to a hidden set of infinity pools and swimming holes.

While this area offers stunning views of Saddle Mountain, please note that it requires scrambling over rocks and navigating steep terrain. It is not officially maintained, and rescue incidents have occurred in the past, so proceed with extreme caution and only if you are an experienced hiker.

Discover a Secret Spot

Not up for a 17K hike? No problem. The team shared a local secret: just a few hundred metres upstream from the popular gorge area near the car park, you can find quiet, private waterholes. It is the perfect alternative if you want to avoid the crowds you might find at other popular spots like Crystal Creek.

Quick Tips for Your Trip

  • Mountain Biking: If you are a cyclist, the old Telstra Tower Track (often called 'Elliot's Revenge') is a steep, challenging route that connects to the walking trail. You can find it on the Trail Forks app.
  • Family Friendly: The waterhole at the start of the trail is perfect for families who might not want to commit to the full hike.
  • Preparation: Always check weather conditions before heading out, and remember that Alligator Creek is only a short 15-minute drive from the suburbs, making it an accessible day out for everyone.
