Easy & Hard Hikes: Bluegum Creek to Ollera Falls
Join the Take a Hike podcast to explore weekend options with an easy hike to Bluegum Creek or a hard hike to Ollera Falls. Blair, Luen Warneke and Cherry Judge share tips for Triple Falls, Lizard Gorge, and extreme Paluma adventures.
Welcome back to the Take A Hike podcast! In this episode, Blair Woodcock is joined by Townsville Bushwalking Club experts Luen Warneke and Cherry Judge to discuss some incredible local trails. Whether you are looking for a relaxed morning walk or a gruelling all-day adventure, we have got you covered.
Before we dive into our main trails, the Club recently tackled Smith Creek Falls. Located just south of Paluma, it involves a 10-kilometre trek down the PRB track, followed by a 2-kilometre detour. It is a hidden gem that is well worth the effort!
The Easy-to-Moderate Option: Bluegum Creek Loop
Cherry set out to find a great accessible walk and delivered the Bluegum Creek loop. This 11-kilometre return track starts near Paluma Village. If you look for the official national park H Track sign, you can step right over it, part the curtain of vines, and follow the well-marked trail down to Triple Falls.
- Triple Falls: An easy descent, finishing with a short 10-metre rope section to reach the bottom. It features a stunning swimming hole perfect for a quick dip.
- The Loop: If you want to keep going instead of turning back, turn right at the main junction to follow the historic Bluegum Creek Trail.
- Highlights: You will pass Mine Creek Lagoon (a massive, beautiful swimming pool) and the historic Hang Flat tungsten mine.
- Safety Tip: Leave the old mining artifacts alone and be extremely careful around the open, un-railed mine shafts. Be prepared for a steep climb to get back out of the gully at the end!
The Hard Option: Ollera Creek Falls
Luen loves a challenge, and Ollera Creek Falls definitely delivers. This track starts just before the Paluma turn-off at Ollera Creek Bridge on Caleo Road. Note: The road ends in private property, so always seek permission before entering or use the alternative access routes.
- Lizard Gorge: Following the track/creek, you will eventually find Lizard Gorge. With its emerald blue water, it makes a great destination on its own - an easy 10-kilometre, 4.5 to 5-hour return trip.
- Ollera Creek Falls: Continuing past Lizard Gorge means serious rock hopping and rugged terrain. The full 16-kilometre return trip can take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours, and is especially treacherous if it is drizzling.
The Extreme Option: Paluma Village via the PRB Track
For the ultimate test, some hikers continue up Ollera Creek all the way to Paluma Village by joining the old PRB track. Right now, it is steep, rugged terrain requiring you to push through dense rainforest. However, dedicated volunteers are working hard to recut the PRB track, with the goal of fully reopening it!
