Explore Wongaloo Conservation Park, 33 km from Townsville, with rainforest, tea tree woodlands, grasslands, wetlands, lake viewpoints, wallabies, and rich birdlife including crimson finches, kingfishers, brolgas, swans, egrets, and many magpie geese.
Wongaloo, a wonderful conservation park only 33 km from Townsville. And more than just the impressive wetlands, also has various woodlands, unique lowland rainforest, and grassland.
We had great 3 hour nature circuit hike exploring in the rainforest, tea tree woodlands, grasslands, and several fantastic viewing points over wetlands and the lake. Lot of varied birdlife and some wallabies. We saw birds of woodland and grassland to wetland types - crimson finches, kingfishers, honeyeaters, swans, brolgas, ducks, heron, egrets, large flocks of magpie geese, and many more.
Wongaloo Conservation Park is listed in the ‘Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia’ (DIWA). It is part of one of the largest coastal wetland complexes on the east coast of Australia and has remained a natural ephemeral hydrological system. Wongaloo Conservation Park offers stunning wildlife observation opportunities as it presents the seasonal movement of wildlife across the coastal plain.
Our thanks to the Trustee, Mark, for the access and support, and we hope the plans to open for public access come to fruition before too long. Hopefully TEL and government will assist support public accessibility, as this is a great resource on Townsville’s doorstep. Keep an eye on the Wongaloo Facebook page.
